1 Samuel 2:1-10
1Hannah prayed and said,
“My heart exults in the Lord;
my strength is exalted in my God.
My mouth derides my enemies,
because I rejoice in my victory.
2 “There is no Holy One like the Lord,
no one besides you;
there is no Rock like our God.
3 Talk no more so very proudly,
let not arrogance come from your mouth;
for the Lord is a God of knowledge,
and by him actions are weighed.
4 The bows of the mighty are broken,
but the feeble gird on strength.
5 Those who were full have hired themselves
out for bread, but those who were hungry
are fat with spoil.
The barren has borne seven,
but she who has many children is forlorn.
6 The Lord kills and brings to life;
he brings down to Sheol and raises up.
7 The Lord makes poor and makes rich;
he brings low, he also exalts.
8 He raises up the poor from the dust;
he lifts the needy from the ash heap,
to make them sit with princes
and inherit a seat of honor.
For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s,
and on them he has set the world.
9 “He will guard the feet of his faithful
ones, but the wicked shall be cut off in
darkness; for not by might does one
prevail.
10 The Lord! His adversaries shall be
shattered; the Most High will thunder in
heaven.
The Lord will judge the ends of the
earth;
he will give strength to his king,
and exalt the power of his anointed.”

Ok. I don’t know if I forgot the story of Hannah, or if I never really knew it, but I picked my verses for the advent guide, mostly because the title was “Hannah’s Prayer” and I thought, “Oooo! I can create a prayer with the kids that mirrors Hannah’s Prayer and that will be a sweet little devotional!” As I sat down to map it out, I of course thought, “Who is Hannah and why is she praying?” Boooyyy, did that change things for me.
To recap: Hannah was married to this guy Elkanah. She was his first wife and Peninnah was his second wife. Let’s call her Penny for short. Penny and Elkanah had an unknown number of kids and Hannah was unable to conceive. I know we all know someone or have experienced ourselves, the struggle to conceive or adopt. It can be expensive and painful. The waiting is agonizing. And to add insult to injury, Penny was a huge (insert expletive) to Hannah. The Bible says Penny “severely provoked her” and “irritated” her because Hannah could not bear children.
Hannah was filled with grief. She wept. She couldn’t eat. Her husband didn’t get it. She prayed and prayed and prayed to God, asking for a child. She pleaded saying, “If you give me a child, I will dedicate that child to you.” I am sure we have all prayed a similar prayer at a point of desperation. “If you are there God and you have the power, I promise I will do anything If you just do this one thing for me. Please God please.” She was mouthing her prayers silently, so filled with sorrow, when Eli, a priest, sees her and thinks she is hammered, “Put away the wine, you look like a drunken spectacle.” She explains the whole thing. He tells her, “Go in Peace, the God of Israel grants the petition you have made to him.” And she leaves.
Soon after, she gets pregnant, has a son, Samuel, dedicates him to the Lord, he becomes Bible famous, etc. She also has a nice prayer that I was supposed to write about, but I didn’t get that far. I was so struck by her story. The struggle to create a family. The great sorrow and great joy. The desperate pleas to a mysterious God. The need for understanding and a community that is free of judgment and cruelty. Is this not all our stories? But the part that had me really thinking about our church community is when Hannah dedicates her child to God. I think of all the children that have been dedicated at Samuel. And while Hannah dedicated her child to God, in a similar sense, our church community is dedicating ourselves to these children. We will come alongside these children in times of great sorrow and great joy. We join in desperate pleas to a mysterious God. We give understanding and a community free of judgement and cruelty. We are dedicating ourselves to each other’s stories. What a beautiful and holy bond. I am grateful that my children will grow with all of you. And I am grateful for all the children that we learn from and grow with each week. Amen.
