A Message from Pastor Jeff

Staying Connected

At the Missouri Mid-South Conference Annual Gathering in June delegates heard Carol Howard Merritt, a pastor and author, talk about changes in the church.  One of the things that she mentioned was how attendance patterns have changed over the years.  It used to be that regular attendance meant being in worship every Sunday, unless you were sick or on vacation.  That isn’t the case anymore.  Because of work schedules, travel schedules, and sport and leisure events regular attendance can mean once or twice a month for some folk.  That is something we have noticed here at Samuel Church.  Many vital, engaged, faithful members simply are not able to be here every Sunday.  While we may lament the change, it is the new reality.

Carol Howard Merritt didn’t discover this change, but she did stress about the importance of making the most of our time with people when we can be together and finding ways to connect in times when we are not all in the same space at the same time.  While attendance patterns change, our desire to be connected hasn’t changed.  We want to be known and to know others.  We want to know what is going on, even if we can’t be a part of it all.  We want to be community, even if we can’t be there on Sunday morning.

Last summer, we tried an experiment with the way we communicated.  We sent out our monthly newsletter, The Call, but we added a brief midweek email that highlighted what happened Sunday morning in worship and what was coming up next week.  The feedback was positive, but not overwhelming, so we discontinued it.  We are going to try it again.

We think the benefits of staying connected with a brief email each week, out weighs the danger of getting too much information.  We promise to keep it short – just a paragraph or two – filling in the blanks for those who missed what happened on Sunday and calling attention to things you may want to be a part of coming up.  We will still publish The Call, our monthly newsletter, because it has important information that won’t be in the midweek emails.  The Call will still come out via email to subscribers, print copies will still be sent to our shut-ins who have requested it, and print copies will be available to pick up here at church for those who like hard copies.

We plan on beginning the midweek emails in September and we look forward to your feed-back.

See you in church, if not this week then sometime soon.  In the meantime, let’s stay connected.

~Pastor Jeff

The Spirituality of Aging:

A Multi-Generational Approach

A Lecture Series Starting Sept 18 at 11:30am

We all do it… Get older, that is!  Join us after church four Sundays this Fall as we explore some of the myths and facts about aging. Learn about some biblical perspectives on growing older. How is our faith formed and reformed through the years.  Find what we can learn from each other and each generation about adaptability and balancing change.  The study is for anyone and everyone:  Older adults who are adjusting to changes, children of those older adults who find themselves navigating new roles, and anyone with an interest in learning more about life’s changes and our faith.  Come to harvest your gifts of wisdom.

The Study will be facilitated by Jan Aerie, M.S., who has served as a Family Counselor and Gerontologist, and is member of the Missouri Mid-South UCC Conference.  Jan has spent a lifetime working with persons and groups and the journey of aging.

We will gather in the Wiese Fellowship Hall from 11:30am to 1pm and share a soup luncheon as we meet.  Here are the dates and outline for our time together:

September 18 - How Old Are You Really?

We will look at: the myths and realities of aging, choosing our age, and what does the Bible say?

October 9 - Do you Care?

The conversation will include: caregiving and receiving, wishes and realities, balancing priorities

October 23 - Tired Eyes – Tired World

We will discuss:  adapting to vulnerability, home and health choices, facing change, managing loss

November 20 - Growing Into Our Self

Our final time together we will focus on: the gifts of aging, harvesting wisdom, sharing life’s learnings, and anything else that comes up that we haven’t covered.

Women's Out to Lunch

St. Louis Metro CROP Hunger Walk to
“Step Off” at Eden Seminary Sun Sept 25

Samuel UCC will be participating in the 2016 St. Louis Metro CROP Hunger Walk at Eden Theological Seminary on Sunday, September 25. Registration begins at 12:30 pm followed by a brief program and the “step-off” at 1:30 pm.

What is the CROP Hunger Walk?
CROP Hunger Walks are community-wide, ecumenical events sponsored by Church World Service (CWS) and organized by local congregations or groups to raise funds to end hunger at home and around the world. The first CROP Hunger Walk was held in 1969 and currently well over 2,000 communities across the United States join in more than 1,600 CROP Hunger Walks each year. CROP Hunger Walks help to provide food and water as well as resources that empower people to meet their own needs. In 2015, the St. Louis CROP Hunger Walk ranked 85th in the country in funds raised, which is a significant accomplishment.

How can you participate?
You can walk in the CROP Hunger Walk and obtain sponsorships that will help alleviate hunger both in our community and around the world. There are both 1-mile and 3-mile routes.
If you are unable to walk, you can sponsor a walker by contributing any amount you choose. Checks should be made payable to CWS/CROP.

Where does my CROP contribution go?
25% of the funds donated to CROP help alleviate hunger in the St. Louis area. This year, local recipients of CROP funds are Circle of Concern, Operation Food Search, and Webster-Rock Hill Ministries. 75% of funds raised will go to Church World Service to help alleviate food insecurity around the world.

How do I sign up?
Anne Grothe will be available each Sunday after church between now and the CROP Hunger Walk to answer questions and sign up walkers and sponsors. Come see Samuel’s CROP poster outside the sanctuary doors and add your name as a walker or as a sponsor.

We hope we will have great participation from Samuel this year!
