Neighbors in Need Offering will be
Collected on Oct 2

Neighbors in Need (NIN) is a special mission offering of the UCC that supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. One-third of NIN funds support the Council for American Indian Ministry(CAIM). Two-thirds of the offering is used by the UCC's Justice and Witness Ministries(JWM) to support a variety of justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects through grants.

Neighbors in Need grants are awarded to churches and organizations doing justice work in their communities. These grants fund projects whose work ranges from direct service to community organizing and advocacy to address systemic injustice. Funding is provided through donations to the Neighbors in Need offering.

Please consider supporting this important mission of the UCC.

World Communion Sunday Oct 2 at 10am

This and every First Sunday of October, we observe World Communion Sunday, where Christians around the world will partake of the Body and Blood of Christ.  It is a reminder that although we are different in many ways and live far from each other, we are all one body in Jesus Christ.  It doesn't matter whether we are from UCC, Catholic, Lutheran, Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, or Non- Denominational traditions - on this Sunday, we gather as Christians to celebrate the one thing we all have in common - Sharing the Eucharist.  Please join us for this special service.

First Friday
Adult Game Night

For October

When:  Friday, Oct 7

Where:   Call the office at 314-727-9540

After a long week, join Samuel Friends for an evening of bidding and trumping or a bit of Domino’s…. or bring a new game to share.  Bottom line—just come.  We gather at 7:00 PM for fun and fellowship.  Bring an appetizer or dessert to share.  If there is Cardinals Play-Off Game, well, then we may take a bit longer to get ourselves organized!  We don’t take ourselves very seriously!  One does not need a partner to play or be a keen card or game player.  Come join us for fellowship.

On October 7th, we will be hosted by a member of the congregation.  RSVP to the office at 314-727-9540 or secretary@samuelucc.org.   See you there!

Mark your calendars for Friday Nov. 4  Our host is TBD.

The Spirituality of Aging: A Multi-Generational Approach

A Lecture Series
Oct 9 and 23 at 11:30am

We all do it… Get older, that is!  Join us after church four Sundays this Fall as we explore some of the myths and facts about aging. Learn about some biblical perspectives on growing older. How is our faith formed and reformed through the years.  Find what we can learn from each other and each generation about adaptability and balancing change.  The study is for anyone and everyone:  Older adults who are adjusting to changes, children of those older adults who find themselves navigating new roles, and anyone with an interest in learning more about life’s changes and our faith.  Come to harvest your gifts of wisdom.

The Study will be facilitated by Jan Aerie, M.S., who has served as a Family Counselor and Gerontologist, and is member of the Missouri Mid-South UCC Conference.  Jan has spent a lifetime working with persons and groups and the journey of aging.

We will gather in the Wiese Fellowship Hall from 11:30am to 1pm and share a soup luncheon as we meet.  Here are the dates and outline for our time together:

October 9 - Do you Care?

The conversation will include: caregiving and receiving, wishes and realities, balancing priorities

October 23 - Tired Eyes – Tired World

We will discuss:  adapting to vulnerability, home and health choices, facing change, managing loss

November 20 - Growing Into Our Self

Our final time together we will focus on: the gifts of aging, harvesting wisdom, sharing life’s learnings, and anything else that comes up that we haven’t covered.

Welcome to our new Student Pastor:
     Diane (DeeDee)
                 Yanczer

My name is Diane (DeeDee) Yanczer and I am a 2nd year Master of Divinity student at Eden Theological Seminary. I have been a member of Pilgrim Congregational Church UCC for the last five years.

Since June 2015, I have also been the Director of Christian Education and the Coordinator of Wednesday Ministries, which is a food ministry. Previous to working at Pilgrim, I was in the banking industry for 28 years. I was born and raised in South Saint Louis and I am the oldest of five girls.

During my first year of seminary, I was placed with Lutheran Senior Services as a Hospice Intern for my contextual education site. I worked under the supervision of a Chaplain. I enjoyed my time there and I am considering going into Chaplaincy after graduation. I am also interested in the problem of homelessness in the Saint Louis area. I volunteered last winter with a group of Eden students to work with the homeless population and it remains an area of great concern for me.

I have two children, Sabrina and Joshua, who are in their thirties. I enjoy spending time with them and my grandchildren, Jaiden and Gianni. Jaiden is 13 and Gianni is 3 months old and they are the loves of my life.  I am looking forward to working with the people of Samuel UCC. I have heard many good things about the church and I am excited to have been placed there for my 2nd year of seminary. I expect that this next year will bring me closer to realizing how God wants me to serve.

Saturday, Oct 15 at 10am

Bring your cats, dogs, hamster, chinchilla, lizard, snake, or whatever other animals you call a part of your family with you to church on Saturday, October 15th.  We will have people snacks and drinks as well as some snacks for our four legged friends on the lawn in front of the church.
At 10:00am we will have a brief service in which we will invite folk to bring their pets forward for a blessing.  Services of blessing of pets are often done in early October around the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the Franciscan Monk known for his love of animals.  If you don’t have a pet, or can’t bring your pet, bring a picture of your pet, or your favorite stuffed animal for blessing.

Blessing of the Stuffed Animals
Sunday, Oct 16, 2016 at 10am

Children are invited to bring a special teddy bear or other stuffed animal lovie to worship on Oct. 16.  There will be a time during the worship service where we will recognize these stuffed friends.
Although they are not alive, these soft and cuddly friends play important places in our children’s lives.  Of course the blessing isn’t so much for the stuffed animals themselves, as for the children who share their love with them.

Habitat Build

Samuel will lead a team of workers on December 10th to finish the Habitat House on Norwich in North County. The bulk of the heavy work should be done by then, so we'll finish painting and probably clean to make the house ready for tenets.
Samuel has contributed $4,000 from the St. Patrick's Dinner toward this year's build. Let's finish the house in Samuel style!

Our Habitat build day will begin with arrival and a meeting at 7:45am.  We will work from 8am to 3pm.  We are looking for 8-10 workers aged 16 or older.  For more information or questions, contact the office at secretary@samuelucc.org or 314-727-9540.
