This is the theme of this year’s stewardship campaign, but it is also at the heart of who we are and what we do at Samuel Church.  We believe strongly that God has put us in this place at this time in history for a purpose.  During the first two weeks of November we will focus more closely on how we are called to Be the Church.  In worship you will hear stories about why we give, and how our generosity makes a difference.  We will be invited to pay attention to how it is that we affect the community around us and how, through the ministries and mission of Samuel Church, we respond to the needs in people’s lives –  in our congregation, locally, and globally.

We will kick things off on Sunday November 6th with a special communion celebration giving thanks for the blessings God has given.  And we will conclude the campaign on Commitment Sunday, November 13th as we make our financial pledges that will shape our ministry priorities for 2017.  In between those Sundays you will receive a mailing with information to help you consider what your personal financial commitment will be in the year ahead.

We hope you will join us as we live out our call to Be the Churchh in the year ahead!

With Gratitude,
The Stewardship Team of Samuel Church

                    Thank you!

A special thanks to the 17 members of Samuel who participated in the the walk and anyone who donated to the CROP walk on Sept 25!  We had a great time with friends both old and new.
Samuel Church raised $1,245!  Of this, 75% will be used to help people around the world who face food and water shortages, while 25% will stay right here in our area.

Thank you all for stepping up and walking out to end Hunger!

The Spirituality of Aging: A Multi-Generational Approach

Final Lecture
Nov 20 11:30am

Join us after church as we explore some of the myths and facts about aging. Our final lecture will be focused on the gifts of aging, harvesting wisdom, sharing life’s learnings, and anything else that comes up that we haven’t covered.

The Study will be facilitated by Jan Aerie, M.S., who has served as a Family Counselor and Gerontologist, and is member of the Missouri Mid-South UCC Conference.  Jan has spent a lifetime working with persons and groups and the journey of aging.

We will gather in the Wiese Fellowship Hall from 11:30am to 1pm and share a soup luncheon as we meet.

Totenfest Sun Nov 22

It is traditional for our congregation, and for other churches of the former Evangelical and Reformed branch of our denomination to observe Memorial Sunday or Totenfest on the last Sunday of the church year.  On this day, during worship, we will provide a time to remember those who have entered life eternal in the past year.  Those who wish to, may light a candle as a visible sign of our remembrance of those who have gone before us and as a sign of our faith and trust in the new life is promised by Christ Jesus - who is the Resurrection and the Life.  Please join us for this special celebration.

Host Night: Tuesday Nov 29-Wed Nov 30

We will host homeless women and families at our church during what is surely a tough time for those without a home as the holiday season begins.  Please consider helping out.  We will need help with transportation, dinner preparation and service, fellowship and staying overnight.  Please contact the office if you're willing to help.  It's a busy time of year, but its a small way to make a big difference!

Building Repairs: Keeping the Water Out

In October, we made a few repairs to the building in still more efforts to prevent water from entering the basement areas.  A French drain, or weeping tile system, was installed on the north side of sanctuary.  This is a trench filled with a perforated pipe and gravel to direct water away from the building.

On the west side of the building under the office, many wheelbarrows of dirt have created a slope away from the building, hoping to direct water away from the basement there.

We hope that these repairs and changes will prevent water from entering the building.

Adult Wassail & Decorating Party

When: Friday, Dec 2 at 7:pm

Where:  Samuel Church

Instead of playing games this month, we will have a Wassail and Decorating Party just like we did last year.
Join us for an evening of fun, fellowship, a bit of decorating, sipping on Wassail, Mulled Wine, and perhaps challenging your friends to your favorite game of dominoes, checkers, backgammon, bridge, or hearts---choose your poison!  Come prepared to have a fun and enjoy your Samuel friends!  Bring someone you'd like to get  to know the amazing folk of Samuel.  We'll gather for fellowship and decorate the church in short order at 7:00 and then get on with the games and festivities.  Bring an appetizer or dessert to share - or just yourself.   We'll have some games but if there is one in particular you are interested in playing please bring that too. Questions or more information?  Call the church office. Hope to see you there!!!  HO, HO, HO!!!

10 Samuel Volunteers Needed
For Habitat Workday on Dec. 10: 7:45am to 3pm.

Sign up Sunday on the Connections Clipboards or call the church office. Our volunteers will be finishing painting, cleaning and whatever else needs to be done so that the homeowners can move in.
Wearing the tee shirts inscribed “I helped build it, then I bought it” are the 2016 UCC Habitat homeowners.  This year, we are helping them rehab a ranch house on a pleasant street of homes in Bellefontaine Neighbors.

Michael, an electrician and Kayia, a customer service rep at BJC Hospital will complete 350 hours of “sweat-equity”, with the help of friends and family,
before the closing.  They will also attend workshops on money management and financial literacy to prepare for owning their first home. With their down payment and a 30 year affordable mortgage, they and their children, Michael Jr. and Mikayia will be set to enjoy life in the home that they helped create.
Volunteers from 19 UCC churches have chosen their Saturday work dates.  There, they will spend 8 hours working with the soon to be homeowners to complete the proscribed projects for the day. Pledged financial contributions from 26 churches will provide the money to complete the rehab.

Habitat St Louis has become one of the leading developers in the St Louis areawith almost 400 homes built or rehabbed.  The St Louis area UCC
churches have been responsible for 26 of them.  Those who have participated have found the interaction with the homeowner and sense of accomplishment at the completion of the project, to have made each Saturday a rewarding day.

News:

Thank you to everyone who helped us celebrate Samuel Preschool’s 50th Anniversary!  What a fun day we had with beautiful weather, delicious food, and special entertainment for the children. In November the children will learn about the first Thanksgiving.
Children in the 3 and 4 year old classes will be talking about what they are thankful for, and working together to prepare a feast to share with another class. Our two year olds will pretend they are at the Farmer’s Market and be counting and sorting fruits and vegetables. The staff is especially thankful for all the children who come to Samuel Preschool.

Nature on the Move brings us a special program on Native Americans and their use of natural resources. Seeing and touching feathers, rocks, bones, plants, and bark will help us experience this great learning opportunity.

Remember if you are shopping for gifts or ordering Christmas and holiday photo cards please visit our website http://www.samuelparents.com and help us earn funds to support our Enrichment Programs.

Christmas is just around the corner and this year we will again be having a special Children's program.  Children and Youth of all ages are invited to participate by attending a breif two hour rehearsal on Saturday, Dec 17 from 10am to 12pm.   The program itself will be performed during worship on Sunday, Dec 18 at 10am.

Chinese Culture Class Nov 13 at 11:30am

Join us for a class where our Chinese friends are the teachers.  They will share some of the things about Chinese culture that we Americans are not familiar with.  For more details, please contact Guangyu Lou.

Sunday Nov 20 at 11:30am

Our Chinese Friends are invited to join us for another Bible Study, where we will look at the stories and traditions of Christianity here in the United States.  We will join the Aging Study attendees for a light lunch before the class.  For more information, please contact Guangyu Lou.

A Meal for Chinese Friends:
Friday, Nov 25 at 5pm

This year, we will again be hosting a traditional Thanksgiving meal for our Chinese friends and students.  It will be a good opportunity for our Chinese friends
and students to learn about American culture and hospitality.  We'll need volunteers to help to make some traditional Thanksgiving food, to set up and clean up.  Sign ups will be available on the Connections Clipboard starting the first week of November.
